Campus SecurityThe Operations Division provides a framework for schools to customize comprehensive security and disaster plans which are approved by school site councils. Fashioned in partnership with school principals with the participation of public safety professionals, the plans have proven to be effective in real situations in real time. When police activity in the community occurred near an elementary school, the plan provided for staff and students to safely execute lockdown procedures. When a gas main adjacent to a campus experienced a leak, the disaster plan proved effective in safely evacuating students to a nearby school. When a chlorine bomb was found in a trash can at a middle school, a unified command including school administrators, district responders, and police and fire department staff worked effectively to secure the incident and with the safety of students and staff at the forefront. The policies and procedures in RUSD's Comprehensive School Safety Plan are subject to both internal and external audit and meet the standards of, and are compliant with, the National Incident Management System. Security plans are coordinated specifically to the Department of Homeland Security threat levels. Responses to security events are executed as incident action plans that are based on careful threat/risk assessment. Disaster plans are detailed to respond to regional disasters such as earthquakes, and to local incidents such as fires, floods, and hazardous spills. School administrators and campus supervisors serve as the front line for implementing plans and are prepared through drill and practice to implement the plans at all three levels. |
