Hawthorne Elementary School

Hawthorne is one of Riverside's oldest schools. Over the years, the 91 freeway and new electrical transmission corridors have crowded the school. In addition, Hawthorne's proximity to BNSF rail tracks caused the Planning and Development Department to question that viability of the school's current location and to suggest the school be relocated.

The Department obtained the necessary state approvals and sited the school on a parcel that was 9.9 acres in an agricultural zone. The parcel size was too small to allow for subdivision under the zoning and the purchase price represented a significant value to RUSD. Planning and Development worked closely with the community to win support for the project.

A combination of Measure B funds, State Building Fund, Community Facilities District, and proceeds from the sales of the surplus land have allowed for the relocation of Hawthorne to the intersection of Victoria Avenue and Irving Street in Riverside.
